An aside: Supposedly one of the first DUBINER's to apply for citizenship did not speak English very well and when asked if he was a Communist, said YES - thinking he was being asked if he was from KAMINETZ! He was denied citizenship.

Oy Vey! Getting from DUBINER to RUBIN was not easy!

It took over two years to unravel the mystery of how the Pomerantz's are related to the DUBINER's, the RUBIN's, the RADISCH's (pronounced Raid-ish and also spelled Radish) and the SPECTOR's. All these families all came from Wysokie-Litovsk or nearby Kamenets-Litovsk—which in the late 1800's had about 4000 Jews. Sibi Shuman (daughter of Frieda Pomerantz) kept insisting (correctly) we are related to the Rubins, Radischs and Spectors. She told of attending weddings in the Rubin and Radisch families, of visiting the Spectors and of spending summers at Jake Rubin's dairy farm in Lebanon, CT. But she could not tell how we were related ... although she believed we were related through her grandmother, CHANA-RAISEL (Rosie) POMERANTZ.

Two puzzle pieces pull it together!

Rosie's (Chana-Raisel [?] POMERANTZ) death certificate, completed by her husband, David POMERANTZ, clearly lists her fathers' name as SCHOLEM FRIEDMAN. And as her tombstone says she is the daughter of Scholem, I assumed her father was SCHOLEM FRIEDMAN. However, Rosie's daughter, Frieda POMERANTZ, listed her mother's maiden name as "DUBIER" on her marriage certificate.Then I looked and saw the marriage certificates of four of Rosie's other children list her maiden name as “DUBINER” (with some spelling variations). It became obvious that all her children thought Rosie's last name was DUBINER ... not FRIEDMAN. BUT ... why does Rosie's death certificate says she is the daughter of SCHOLEM FRIEDMAN? It took another two years to realize that Rosie's father, Scholem FRIEDMAN, must have died young and her mother remarried ... Mr. Scholem DUBINER?

And then came the BIG CLUE . . . In 1922, Rosie's youngest daughter, Sarah POMERANTZ married Sam LEVINE and listed her mother as ROSE RUBIN on her marriage certificate. Could the RUBIN's and the DUBINER's be the same family? ... YES!

Sholem DUBINER (b. 1891) (ben Schrage-Feivel DUBINER & Leah Morganstern) immigrated to the US in 1911. Upon arrival in the US he changed his name to Sam REUBEN and eventually changed it again to RUBIN. The entire branch of this family followed suite. See below for more details!

Generation 1

UNKNOWN DUBINER was born before 1810. He married UNKNOWN UNKNOWN. She too was most likely born before 1810.

Source: Backwards reasoning ... as Scholem was born about 1830 we have assumed his parents were at least 20 at the time of his birth.

i. SCHOLEM DUBINER, born about 1830 in Brest-Litovsk; died before 1888 in Kamenets-Litovsk.

Generation 2

SCHOLEM DUBINER

SCHOLEM DUBINER (UNKNOWN 1) was born about 1830 in Brest-Litovsk died in Kamenets-Litovsk prior to 1891. He married BEILA LEVINE about 1850 in Kamenets-Litovsk.

BEILA was born about 1830 in Russia and died before 1914 in Kamenets-Litovsk. NOTE: It is possible BEILA LEVINE first married SCHOLEM FRIEDMAN, had two children before he died and then married SCHOLEM DUBINER and had more children. See explanation above.

Sources & Assumptions: Immigration and marriage records of many of their children list their names as some variation of SCHOLEM DUBINER and BEILE LEVINE. In addition, we have found DUBINER’s listed on Kamenets-Litovsk tax and census records – but alas, no ages are listed. As Beile’s eldest known child was born about 1850, we have assumed she would have been about 20 when her first child was born and hence, have assumed a birth year of 1830.

NOTE: There seem to be many descendants in the family named after Scholem. We assume he died in Kamenets-Litovsk prior to 1891 when his son FEIVEL named one of his sons SCHOLEM (b. 1892) and his son, AHRON-MICHAL, named his last son SCHOLEM. Presumably, Nathan POMERANTZ named his daugher Beila (aka Bert - born 1914) after his maternal gm, Beila LEVINE-DUBINER, and so we assume Beile (the elder) died prior to 1914.

BEILA LEVINE-FRIEDMAN-DUBINER had at least five children and perhaps more:

i. AHRON-MICHALFRIEDMAN-DUBINER, born about 1850, Kamenets-Litovsk; died before 1906, Kamenets-Litovsk.

ii. CHANA- RAISEL (FRIEDMAN-DUBINER) POMERANTZ, born 1859, Kamenets-Litovsk; died 26 Aug 1933 while living at 103 Hester Street, NYC.

iii. SCHRAGE-FEIVEL DUBINER, born about 1862, Kamenets-Litovsk; died about 1912, Kamenets-Litovsk.

iv. SCHJE DUBINER, born about 1872, Kamenets-Litovsk. He immigrated on the SS Pennland from Liverpool to Philadelpia in May 1898 and was going to his brother-in-law David Pomerantz (Chana Raisel's husband). We have no further info about Schje.

v. MOSHE DUBINER went to Israel and had children who lived in Israel and Argentina. Additional info pending!

vi. *FRIEDA (DUBINER) CHESSLER, born Kamenets-Litovsk; died NYC.

*NOTE: Frieda MAY NOT BE a daughter of Scholem and Beila. She might be a niece (the daughter of one of Sholem’s brothers). Also, as we do not know her age, perhaps she belongs higher on this list.

MORDUK DUBINER (aka Mordk)

MORDUK DUBINER (UNKNOWN 1) was born about 1843 in Brest-Litovsk. We have very little information about Morduk and his offspring ... and it is all included here!

Source: 1912 Grodno Voters List, Shows LEIZOR, son of MORDK DUBINER, as a voter. It also shows FEIVEL, son of SHOLEM DUBINER, as a voter. As MORDK and SHOLEM both come from Brest , and as their grandchildren clearly knew each other in America, I have assumed they are brothers ... BUT ... this assumption MAY NOT BE VALID!!!

We have backtracked through generations to guesstimate Morduk's age … we know his grandson, CHAIM-HIRSCH DUBINER was born 1883. If Chiam-Hirsch's father was at least 20 years older, LEIZOR was born about 1863 and if MORDUK was at least 20 years older than his son, he was born about 1843.

And that is all we “know” about Morduk!

He was 28 years old and unmarried and stated he was from Wisiko, Russia and was going to his cousin, L. LEVIN on 42nd Avenue, NYC. He listed his father LEIZOR as his nearest relative from whence he came.

AHRON-MICHAL DUBINER (aka Michal, Aaron, Arnold, Yicheal-Michal)

AHARON- MICHAL DUBINER (SCHOLEM FRIEDMAN 2, UNKNOWN 1) was born about 1850 in Kamenets-Litovsk and died before 1904 in Kamenets-Litovsk. He married TEURBA-FRUMA SCHWELLIN (aka Taube or Tillie Rubin). She was born about 1850 in Brest-Litovsk and died 22 Dec 1936 in NYC.

Sources: Michal’s wife's (Tillie Rubin) death certificate, states her husband was Arnold M. (Ahron Michal) Rubin. His daughter Rebecca (Dubiner) Radish’s death certificate states his name was AARON RUBIN and his son, Davis-Libe's death certificate states his name was AHARON-MICHAL. However, Rebecca and Leah’s tombstone show his name as “YICHEAL-MICHAL”. We know he died prior to 1906 as Tillie’s immigration records state she was a widow upon arrival in the US and we presume it was before 1904 as his son, MEIER named his son MICHAL-ARON in 1904.

TEURBA-FRUMA SCHWELLIN is the daughter of Yakov Tzvi SCHWELLIN & Lena LEVINSKY.

David Rubin’s marriage certificate shows his mother's maiden name as “SCHWELLIN”. Jacob Rubin’s marriage certificate shows his mother's maiden name as “SCHWERSKER” and Rebecca Rubin’s marriage certificate shows her mother's maiden name as Tillie “GOLD”. (???) Tillie’s death certificate (#25469) states her father was JACK SWIRSKY and her mother was LENA SWIRSKY however another document lists her as the daughter of YAKOV SCHWELLIN and LENA LEVINSKY.

Immigration records show TAUBE, widow, age fifty, immigrating with two of her sons - SCHOLEM (11) and SCHAME (20) on Mar 03, 1908 on the SS NOORDAM from Rotterdam. They all immigrated with the surname DUBINER. Records state she was 4"10 1/ 2" with brown hair and brown eyes and that SCHAME was 5'4" with brown hair and gray eyes. They were all headed to TAUBE's son DL DUBINER (Davis-Libe) at 42 Gouverneur St. NY. The ship manifest states they were from Wisoki-Litovsk.

The 1910 census shows Taube (aka Tillie) had 10 children, all surviving as of 1910 and shows Tillie (age 55) living with her daughter and son-in-law—Bascha-Chayie (Rebecca) & Morris RADISCH.

In 1920, Morris and Rebecca RADISCH and family (with Taube) were living at 67-69 Avenue D and several of Taube's other children lived in the building as well: Charles (Scholem) with his wife Anna, Jacob with his wife Dora (Chessler) and Leah and her husband Josef.

Taube died 22 Dec 1936. Her death certificate states she was living at 1606 47th Street, Brooklyn, NY when she died. It also states she had been in the US for 27 years and was a resident of NY for 11 years. Taube (Tillie) is buried next to LEAH & BASCHA-CHAYIE (Rebecca) in Washington Cemetery #5 on Bay Parkway in Brooklyn, NY—in the Wisoko-Litowski section—Post #497, Row 6, Grave 11. Note: Row 6 is actually 10-12 rows back!

Ahron-Michal and Taube’s Children

CHAIM-MOSHE DUBINER aka MORRIS RUBIN  

CHAIM-MOSHE DUBINER aka MORRIS RUBIN. (AHRON-MICHAL 3 DUBINER, SCHOLEM 2, UNKNOWN 1) was born about 1870 in Wysokie Litovsk. He married SORE BEILA FARBSTEIN in Russia about 1896. She was born in Russia about 1873. Her father was MOSHE-ARON FARBSTEIN.

CHAIM-MOSHE, age 29, married and a tailor, with $5 in his pocket and traveling as MORRIS, immigrated to the US in 1899. He left Hamburg on 25 APR 1899 on the VIOLA headed to London, England and then sailed on the SS TONGARIRO from Liverpool 11 MAY 1899 to Quebec, arriving 16 MAY 1899. He was traveling with Jacob FARBSTEIN (his brother-in-law?) who was single and also a tailor. Both stated they were from Grodno and they were headed to NYC to their Uncle, M. ARON….SWKY at 237 Davidson St., NY.

Three years later his wife and two children joined him in the US. On 28 Sep 1902, SORE (29), traveling with her sister-in-law BASCHE-CHAYE (19), immigrated with her two daughters, SCHENE age five and ETTEL age four. They sailed on the SS NOORDAM out of Rotterdam. SORE states she was going to her husband CHIAM (while BASHA states she was going to her brother), however, upon arrival they were detained and were eventually released to SORE's husband (and BASCHE’s brother) MORRIS RUBIN who was living at 26-28 Montgomery St., NYC. NOTE: CHIAM-MOSHE DUBINER changed his name to MORRIS RUBIN.

The 1910 US Census shows MORRIS (38), married to SARAH (36), with five children. Jonnie (Scheine) (14) , Etta (Ettel) (12) , Becky (6), Josephina (5) and Bessie (3). Sarah states she gave birth to six children but only five are living. Morris is listed as a tailor for cloaks. They are living at 165 Suffolk Street, NY and they have three boarders living with them.

By 1920 the census lists them living at 353 Beekman Ave, Bronx, NY; Morris (49) is a tailor (fasteners) and

Sarah (44), Jeanette (23), Rita (Becky?) (16), Josephine (14) and Beatrice (13) are living at home. Assumption: Etta has married.

In 1930 they are still living at 353 Beekman Avenue and Morris (60) is a dress operator and Sarah (56), Rita (25), Josephine (23), Beatrice (22) are living at home. Assumption: Jeanette married.

MORRIS died on 10 Nov 1937at the age of 65 in Montefiore Hospital, Bronx, NY.

SORE BEILA died 11 Sep 1952, NYC at the age of 79.

They are both buried in Washington Cemetery #5, Bay Parkway, Brooklyn, NY, Post 497 Row 3..

CHAIM-MOSHE DUBINER & SORE BEILA FARBSTEIN had five daughters:

1. SCHENE DUBINER aka JENNIE (RUBIN) SCHWARTZ . Born 1897 in Russia. Immigration on 28 Sep 1902 in SS NOORDAM. She married Abraham Schwartz on 27 Oct 1921 in Bronx, NY.
2. ETTEL DUBINER aka ETTA RUBIN . Born 1898 in Russia. Immigration on 28 Sep 1902 in SS NOORDAM.
3. BECKY RUBIN . Born on 01 Jul 1903 in New York
4. JOSEPHINA RUBIN. Born on 04 Apr 1905 in New York.
5. BESSIE (RUBIN) TROSKIN. Born on 15 Jan 1907 in New York. She married David Troskin on 28 Nov 1935 in Bronx, NY. In 1959 Bessie had her name legally changed to Beatrice.

 

MEIER DUBINER (aka MEYER RUBIN)  

MEIER DUBINER (AHRON-MICHAL DUBINER 3, SCHOLEM 2, UNKNOWN 1) was born about 1872 in Kamenets. About 1900 he married PESHE (aka Pauline) UNKNOWN in Russia where they had two children. She was born about 1883 in Wysokie Litovsk.

MEIER immigrates to the US 16 JUL 1903 on the SS AMSTERDAM. He was traveling with his sister LEAH. The manifest states he is married. Meier immigrated at the age of thirty (30), from Soklolsky-Litovsk, had $3, and was going to his brother M. DUBINER at 26-28 Montgomery St, NYC. NOTE: His brother, Chiam-Moshe DUBINER, aka MORRIS RUBIN was living at 26-28 Montgomery St. at this time.

The 1910 US Census shows “MICHAEL” (38) and CHARLES RUBIN (15) living with LEAH (35) and “SAM SOGOLSKY” (Josef, age 35). It is clear that this is the correct family as all their ages and immigration information match the known facts. Meyer is listed as being a presser.

It was not until 01 March 1911, that his wife, PESHE DUBINER, age 28, immigrated with her daughter, Jospe (aka Yetta) (9) and son, Arie (aka Aron-Michal) (7) on the SS NOORDAM. The manifest states they were going to her husband Meyer DUBINER at 127 Pitt St.

In 1920, they were living at 113 Broome Street, NYC. Meier claimed he was forty-two (making him five years younger than his immigration records). His wife, PAULINE is thirty-seven (consistent with her immigration records). Their daughter Yetta is 16 and a bookkeeper, and their son Michael (Aron Michal) is 15 and is a dental mechanic. They also have a son Max, age 3. Meier is a presser of cloaks.

Yetta married before 1930 as the 1930 US census shows PAULINE living at 76 Avenue C in Manhattan with Michael and Max. Michael is still listed as a Dental Mechanic.

MEYER died in NYC 15 Jan 1930 at age 58 and was buried on 16 Jan 1930 in Washington Cemetery #5, Bay Parkway, Brooklyn, NY.

MEIER DUBINER & PESHE UNKNOWN-DUBINER had three children:

i. YETTA RUBIN. Born about 1902 in Wysokie Litovsk Immigrated in 1911 listed as JOSPE on the ship manifest. Immigration on 01 Mar 1911 in SS Noordam from Rotterdam to NY.

ii. ARON-MICHAL RUBIN. Born about 1904 in Wysokie Litovsk. Immigration on 01 Mar 1911 in SS Noordam from Rotterdam to NY. Also known as was Arie, Michal, Michael.

iii. MAX RUBIN. Born about 1916 in New York, NY.

LEAH DUBINER (aka Lea Sokolsky)  

LEAH (DUBINER) SOKOLSKY (AHRON-MICHAL DUBINER 3, SCHOLEM 2, UNKNOWN 1) was born about 1875 in Russia. She married JOSEPH SOKOLSKY (born 1874) in 1900 in Russia (prior to immigrating to the US). They had no children.

Josef immigrated to the US 25 Feb 1902 on the SS ROTTERDAM from Rotterdam. He is listed on the manifest as ZAWEL SOKOLSKY, age 26, married, from Wysoko-Lit. , had $2 and was going to his brother-in-law, C DUBINER (Morris) at 27 Market St, NYC.

LEAH immigrated to the US 16 Jul 1903 on the SS AMSTERDAM from Rotterdam. She was traveling with her brother MEIER. The ship manifest lists her as “Leie Sokolski” age 27 implying a birth year of 1875 and states she was going to her husband, S. SOKOLSKI at 26 -28 Montgomery St., NY. (Same address as her brother MORRIS.) It states her last place of residence was "Wijsoki" and her ethnicity was Russian, Hebrew.

The 1910 US Census shows Leah and her husband SAM SAGOLSKY (?) living at 649 East 5th Street. Josef is a cutter (of cloaks). It states they had been married for ten years and had no children. Living with them are Leah’s brothers, Meyer (38) and Charles (15). All the ages and details about the years they immigrated are correct so we believe it is them. Meyer is listed as being a presser.

The 1920 US Census, states she was 44 in 1920 concurring with a birth year of 1875. The 1920 US Census also states her husband, Joseph, was 45 in 1920, implying a birth year of 1874. He is listed as being a tailor in a clothing factory.

LEAH was killed in a car accident with her sister, BASCHA-CHAYIE (aka Rebecca) on 06 Sep 1930. (See information on BASCHA-CHAYIE for details.) Her death certificate (#17866) states she resided at 2220 53rd Street in Brooklyn, NY at the time of her death. Her tombstone reads “Beloved wife and sister” and states she is the daughter of Yicheal Michal (Yud-chet-yud-aleph-lamed - Mem-yud-kaf-lamed). She is buried in Washington Cemetery #5, Bay Parkway, Brooklyn, NY Post 497 Row 6 Grave 12, next to her sister, Bascha-Chayie.

Joseph died 17 Apr 1937 in NY and is also is buried in Washington Cemetery #5, Bay Parkway, Brooklyn, NY Post 497.

SCHAYE DUBINER (aka Sam Rubin)

SCHAYE DUBINER (AHRON-MICHAL DUBINER 3, SCHOLEM 2, UNKNOWN 1). SCHAYE was born on 02 Mar 1878 in Wysokie-Litovsk. He married BERTHA SLUCHINSKY, daughter of Nochum SLUCHINSKY & Chaye MISKOWSKY 18 Dec 1909 in NYC. She was born about 1884 in Russia. Bertha was also known as Rebecca or Beckie SLUCHANSKY. Sam died on 05 Jan 1924 in Brooklyn, NY at the age of 46.

Records show that Sam immigrated to the US on 06 Sep 1904 on the SS RIJNDAM having sailed from Rotterdam. He was 26, a shoemaker from Wysokie and going to his brother, M. DUBINER. Upon arrival in NY he was detained and was picked up by his brother, Morris RUBIN living at 165 Suffolk, St.

Sam and Bertha were married on 18 Dec 1909 in New York, NY. While he immigrated as SCHAYE DUBINER, his marriage certificate reads SAM RUBIN. Sam was living at 42 Gouverneur Street in NYC at the time of his marriage. (This is the same address as his brother, Davis-Libe.) Sam lists his occupation as “Expressman”. Rebecca was living at 221 E 66 th St, NYC and was 26 when they married. Sam listed his father as Michal RUBIN and his mother as Teurba SWINSKY.

Sam became a naturalized citizen on 03 Oct 1916 in New York, NY. His naturalization papers state he entered the country the same date and on the same ship as above. That is how we made the connection that SCHAYE DUBINER and SAM RUBIN were, in fact, the same person.

The 1930 US Census shows the family living at 73 Ave C, NYC close to his brother Meier’s family.

SCHAYE DUBINER & BERTHA SLUCHINSKY had five girls and one boy:

i. ROSE RUBIN. Born 1910 in New York, NY.

ii. SARAH RUBIN. Born 1911 in New York.

iii. YETTA (RUBIN) LARIT . Born on 08 Feb 1913. She married Isador LARIT 09 Jun 1934 in Brooklyn, New York. Died 02 Nov 2000 in Santa Monica, CA.

iv. FANNIE RUBIN. Born 1914 in New York, NY.

v. MINNIE RUBIN. Born 1916 in New York, NY.

vi. ARNOLD RUBIN. Born 1920 in New York.

DAVIS-LIBE DUBINER (aka David Rubin)  

DAVIS-LIBE DUBINER aka DAVID RUBIN (AHRON-MICHAL DUBINER 3, SCHOLEM 2, UNKNOWN 1) was born 15 Jul 1881 in Russia and died 14 Jul 1958 in Brooklyn, NY. He married BECKY SPECTOR 22 May 1905 in NY, daughter of S? SPECTOR and YETTA SAVITSKY(?). She was born 15 Mar 1885 in Russia and died 14 Aug 1968 in Brooklyn, NY. Family reports say Becky was a jolly lady!

DAVIS-LIBE, age 19, immigrated on the SS ROTTERDAM that sailed from Rotterdam and arrived in the US on 23 Jul 1900. (Implies a birth year of 1881.) He stated he was from “Wisock,” was a tailor, was single and that his brother paid his passage. He was going to his brother, M. DUBINER (Morris) at 27 Market St., NYC. NOTE: This was the same destination given by ZAWEL (Josef) SOKOLSKI (Leah's husband) two years later.

Their marriage certificate (# 10656) states that Davis (28) was living at 176 Ludlow St. and Becky (25) was living at 44 Governeur St. They must have moved to 42 Governeur Street shortly after they married as Taube and two of her children were headed there upon immigration in 1908.

The 1910 US Census shows they were still living at 42 Governeur St. and had two children, MICHAL (4) (aka Aaron) and YETTA (10 months) (aka Henrietta). David was a tailor of cloaks and they had been married five years. They were living next door to Sam (45) and Katy (42) SPECTOR. The SPECTOR’s had four children by 1910 –Meyer (23), Sarah (18), Joe (15) and Benny (7). Best guess is that Sam SPECTOR and Becky SPECTOR were brother and sister.

According to the 1920 census, DAVIS and BECKY lived at 169 Brook Avenue (135-136th Streets) and he was an operator for a coat manufacturing firm. ARON is not listed on the 1920 census, however, a son - the same age as ARON, is listed as “HENRY” ??? Perhaps the census taker thought HENRIETTA was two people: HENRY and YETTA!

By 1930 the family had moved to Nassau Avenue in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Census records list "DAVID" as a store manager; ARON (24) as a clerk in a law office; HENRIETTA (19) as a public school teacher.

DAVID and BECKY RUBIN are buried together in Washington Cemetery #5 on Bay Parkway in Brooklyn, NY —in the Wisoko-Litowski section (the same section as Bascha-Chayie, Leah and Taube) —Post #497. They are towards the front of the section on the left. NOTE: Their death dates were obtained from their tombstones.

DAVIS RUBIN and BECKY SPECTOR had four children:

i. MICHAL-ARON RUBIN (aka Aaron, Aaron Michal, Michael) Born 12 Mar 1906, Manhattan, NYC. He married Isabel Rosalind RUBINSTEIN on 27 Dec 1935 in Brooklyn, NY. Died on 03 Jul 1995 in NYC.

ii. HENRIETTA SHEILA RUBIN (aka Yetta) Born 1909, Manhattan, NYC. She married Saul SCHULLMAN on 27 Dec 1932 in Brooklyn, New York.

iii. JULIUS RUBIN, Born 1913, Brooklyn, NYC.

iv. GERTIE RUBIN, B orn 29 Sep 1915 in Brooklyn, NY. She married Morris WOLITZ on 15 Nov 1936 in Brooklyn, NY. She died on 29 May 2003 in Delray Beach, FL .

NOTE: Aaron Rubin and his brother Julius (aka Shooey?) invented and established the Veg Packing Corp. Theirs was the first company to offer bagged salads!

BASCHA-CHAYIE DUBINER (aka Rebecca Radisch or ... Becky, Beatrice, ...)  

BASCHA-CHAYIE (DUBINER-RUBIN) RADISCH (AHRON-MICHAL DUBINER 3, SCHOLEM 2, UNKNOWN 1) was born 1883 in Kamenets-Litovsk and died 06 Sep 1930 in a car accident on Ocean Pkwy in Brooklyn, NY . She married MORRIS RADISCH 05 Dec 1905 in NY (son of ABRAHAM RADISCH and ESTHER SAKOWITZ). He was born 25 Dec 1886 in Kamenets-Litovsk and died 13 Aug 1962 in NYC.

BASHE DUBINER immigrated to the US at age 18. She arrived in NY 28 Sep 1902 on the SS NOORDAM. She stated she was going to her brother, Chiam DUBINER at 26-28 Montgomery St., NYC. She was traveling with her sister-in-law (Chiam's wife) SORE BEILA DUBINER who was 29 and with Sore and Chaim's two children, Shene (5) and Ettel (4).

Her marriage certificate (#26809) states “Rebecca” was 19 in 1905 (implying a birth year of 1886) and Morris was 21 (implying a birth year of 1884). It also states she was living at 167 Ludlow St. and he was living at 119 Cannon St. in NYC when they married.

The 1910 census indicates BASCHA-CHAYIE had two children. In 1930, Morris, Bascha-Chayie, Sam, Anne and Taube (her mother) were living at 6408 19th Avenue in Brooklyn.

Unfortunately, Bascha-Chayie (47) and her sister Leah (55) died in 06 Sep 1930 in an automobile accident while Bascha-Chayie's son Larry was driving. One version of the story says Larry just got his drivers license and another version says he & Mildred just returned from their honeymoon and Larry fell asleep at the wheel. In any event, Bascha-Chayie and Leah were riding in the rumble seat and were either crushed or decapitated as it closed when Larry hit a traffic stanchion on Ocean Parkway and Avenue C in Brooklyn, NY. Basch-Chayie's nephew Arnold Rubin was in the car at the time of the accident. He said he never got over being in the car during the accident that killed his aunts Leah and Bascha. It affected him for his entire life.

BASCHA-CHAYIE’S (Rebecca's) death certificate in 1930 confirms her immigration information as it states she had been in the US for 28 years, implying she immigrated in 1902.

After Bascha Chayie died, MORRIS married FANNIE MOSS. Fannie had been married previously and had a daughter (Bobbie) who became Morris’s step-daughter. When Morris died, Fannie was living at 3100 Brighton 2nd Street, Brooklyn, NY.

BASCHA-CHAYIE is buried in Washington Cemetery #5, Bay Parkway, Brooklyn, NY Post 497 Row 6 Grave 11 next to her sister Leah. MORRIS RADISCH is buried in Beth David Cemetery with his second wife, FANNIE.

MORRIS RADISCH (pronounced Raid-ish) was the first of his siblings to arrive in the US (1900). After he was settled, he sent for his mother and father, Abraham & Esther. Morris and his brother Hyman founded the RADISCH COAL & OIL COMPANY and later sold it to Northville Industries. Another of Morris’s brothers worked for the Herald Tribune.

Family legend has it that Morris was very strong. To prove his strength he lifted a car, but it fell on him. Clearly he lived to tell about it. He also was quite a character and a savvy business man. One story told about him is that he traded his old broken down horse for a much younger horse that refused to go up hills. He blindfolded the new horse and led him up and down the hills in the Bronx for many years.

NOTE: Many of our ancestors had no idea of the date they were born. Some knew the time of year they were born as they were told “you were born on the night of the second Chanukah candle” .. or some variation of that. When they came to the US and were asked their “date of birth”, many chose dates they could remember. It is interesting to note that Morris RADISCH chose Christmas Day as his birth date! Perhaps he thought ‘everyone else is celebrating; why not give myself something to celebrate’!

SCHAME DUBINER

SCHAME DUBINER (AHRON-MICHAL 3 DUBINER, SCHOLEM 2, UNKNOWN 1) was born about 1887 in Brest-Litovsk.

Immigration records state Schame was 20 when he arrived in the US on 03 Mar 1908, implying birth year of 1887 or 1888. He arrived on the SS NOORDAM that sailed from Rotterdam and he traveled with his mother TAUBE (age 50) and brother SCHOLEM (age 11). The ship manifest lists him as being 5’ 4” tall with brown hair and grey eyes. The three of them were headed to Taube’s son (Schame and Scholem’s brother) DL (DAVIS-LIBE) DUBINER at 42 Gouveneur St., NY.

We have no additional information about SCHAME. NOTE: Schame is a Yiddish nickname linked to the Hebrew name Shamai, a first century BCE Talmudic scholar.

JACOB DUBINER (aka Jake Rubin)

JACOB DUBINER (AHRON-MICHAL DUBINER 3, SCHOLEM 2, UNKNOWN 1) was born 5 Feb 1887 in Kamenets-Litovsk and died 3 NOV 1955 in Lebanon, CT. He married DORA CHESSLER 26 May 1918 in NY, daughter of BENJAMIN CHESSLER and FRIEDA DUBINER. Dora was born 1896 in Grodno, Russia.

It seems that Dora's mother, Frieda Dubiner, was a sister of Michal Dubiner who was Jacob Rubin's father - making them first cousins. It is possible Frieda and Michal were cousins - and that would make Jake and Dora 2nd cousins. hmmm...

JACOB immigrated as YANKEL DOBNER on the SS GRAF WALDERSEE from Hamburg. He arrived in NY on 29 Dec 1905 and was detained until 5:15 PM on December 30 th. He said he was a furrier from Wysokie and he was going to his brother, Moishe DOBNER at 165 Suffolk Street.

DABE CZESLER (Dora Chessler) immigrated on the SS NOORDAM from Rotterdam arriving 21 Jan 1914. She was 18, 5" tall with brown hair, had $20 and was going to her brother Yankel Chessler at 304 E 3rd Street, NYC. Her last permanent residence was "wisooki leth" (Wysokie-Litovsk) . She was a seamstress and her closest relative left behind was her father, Bobe CZESLER.

Jacob’s WWI Draft Registration in 1917 states his birth date was 5 Feb 1887 and he was born in Wysokie, Russia, was medium height and build and had brown eyes and black hair. In 1917 he was living with his mother at 332 E. 4th St , NYC and he was 30 years old.

Jacob and Dora were married in 1918 (marriage certificate # 15539) when Jacob was 31 (implying birth year 1887) and Dora was 22 when (implying birth year 1896). They were both living at 67 Avenue D at the time of their marriage.

In 1920, Jake and Dora lived on Avenue D in NYC and Jake was a cap maker (making fur caps?) in a factory. By 1926, they had moved out of the city as their daughter Chaia was born on Jake's dairy farm in Lebanon, CT. Many of the POMERANTZ's report they visited Jake's farm during the summer months.

NOTE: In reviewing Mt. Hebron and Mt. Lebanon cemetery records, I found two sets of Jacob and Dora Rubin’s ...but I believe both sets are people too old to be the people listed above. Perhaps Jake and Dora were buried on the farm ... or somewhere else in CT.

Jacob died 03 Nov 1955 in Lebanon, CT, Dora also died in CT.

MOTEL DUBINER (aka Max Rubin)  

MOTEL DUBINER (aka Max RUBIN) (AHRON-MICHAL 3 DUBINER, SCHOLEM 2, UNKNOWN 1) was born about 1888 in Sokolsky-Litovsk.

He immigrated to New York on 26 Dec 1906 on the SS POTSDAM from Rotterdam. He was 18 (implying a birth year of 1888), is listed as a tailor and is going to his brother CH (aim) DUBINER c/o M. RUBIN at 165 Suffolk Street.

The 1910 US Census lists a Max RUBIN, age 22, living at 216 Clinton St, as a boarder. He is a tailor. This MAY be Motel.

SCHOLEM DUBINER (aka Charles Rubin)  

SCHOLEM DUBINER (AHRON-MICHAL 3 DUBINER, SCHOLEM 2, UNKNOWN 1) was born about 1897 in Brest-Litovsk. He married ANNA UNKNOWN 1918. She was born about 1897 in NY.

Immigration records state he was eleven when he arrived in the US on 03 Mar 1908, implying birth year of 1897. He arrived on the SS NOORDAM that sailed from Rotterdam and he traveled with his mother TAUBE (age 50) and brother SCHAME (age 20). The three of them were headed to Taube’s son (Schame and Scholem’s brother) DL (DAVIS-LIBE) DUBINER at 42 Gouveneur St., NY.

In the 1910 census he is listed as being 15 and living with his sister Leah and her husband Josef at 649 East 5 th Street along with his brother Meier.

The 1920 US Census incorrectly states Charles, Schame and Taube immigrated in 1906 rather than 1908.

By 1920, Charles was married to Anna and their first son, Arnold was two years old. They were living on Avenue D next to Charles' sister, Bascha-Chayie & Morris Radisch, his brother, Jake & Dora Rubin, Leah and her husband, Josef Sokolsky, and their mother, Taube Rubin who was living with Bascha-Chayie. The 1930 US Census states he was naturalized in 1917. In 1920 and 1930 he lists his occupation as “clothes dyeing”.

The 1930 US Census shows the family living in Brooklyn. Charles is in the cleaning and dyeing business. Their ages are listed as follows: Charles (36), Anna (34), Arnold (13) Stanley (8)

She married DAVID POMERANTZ about 1875 in Kamenets-Litovsk, Grodno Gubernia, son of NATHAN POMERANTZ and BEILA SILBERGLEIT. He was born 1857 in Kamenets-Litovsk, and died 29 Aug 1951 in 1020 Ocean Pkwy SUV(?) Nursing Home, Brooklyn, New York.

FEIVEL DUBINER (SCHOLEM 2, UNKNOWN 1) was born about 1862 in Kamenets-Litovsk and died before 1924 in Kamenets-Litovsk. He married LEAH MORGANSTERN before 1884 in Kamenets-Litovsk. She was born 1862 in Brest-Litovsk and died in the US.

Sources & Assumptions: As we know FEIVEL’s wife, LEAH, was born about 1862, we have assumed a comparable age for him. SAM DUBINER-RUBIN lists his father as "FEINEL" DUBINER from Kamenets-Litovsk. MAX RUBIN lists his father as PHILIP on his marriage certificate in 1921. The 1912 Grodno Voters List shows a "FOYVEL" whose father was "SHOLEM." Marriage and draft records from other children show variations of the name FEIVEL.

LEAH (MORGANSTERN) DUBINER immigrated to the US at age 62, arriving 20 Nov 1924 on the HOMERIC that sailed from Cherbourg. She was widowed and traveled with two of her children – a daughter, GAIMENDEL (age 18) and a son, MENDEL (age 17). MENDEL is listed as a laborer. They were headed to LEAH’s son (and GAIMENDEL and MENDEL’s brother), SAM RUBIN, who was living at 642 East 9 th Street, NYC.

The 1930 US census shows LEAH with a last name of RUBIN (rather than DUBINER) and shows she was living with two sons, MENDEL RUBIN and HYMAN RUBIN on E. 5th Street in Manhattan.

MOTEL (MAX) RUBIN listed his mother’s maiden name as LEAH “MOLDRINBOM” on his marriage certificate in 1921 and as "LEAH MORGAN" when he re-married in 1924.

SCHRAGE- FEIVEL DUBINER and LEAH MORGANSTERN's Children

 

ABRAHAM DUBINER (aka Abraham Rubin)

ABRAHAM DUBINER (SCHRAGE-FEIVEL 3, SCHOLEM 2, UNKNOWN 1) was born 01 Dec 1884 in Kamenets-Litovsk and died 11 Oct 1939 in Brooklyn, NY at age 55. He married SIRILA UNTERMAN, on 20 Oct 1909 in Kamenets-Litovsk. SIRILA was the daughter of ELIAHU UNTERMAN and SCHEINE UNKNOWN and she was born 22 May 1888 in Brest-Litovsk, and died 1965. This was an arranged marriage. The DUBINER's were well off and the UNTERMANS were from a distinguished group of rabbi's and scholars so it was considered a very good match.

Immigration records indicate Abraham immigrated to the US in 1913 (arriving on 30 Dec 1913 on the SS FINLAND from Antwerp ) at which time he traveled with his brother MOTEL (Max). They were headed to their brother SCHULEM DUBINER (aka Sam Rubin) at 213 E. 7th St. NYC. WWI then made travel impossible so Sirila was unable to join him until after the war in 1920.

Abraham worked as a dairyman and was employed by his brother SAM RUBIN thru 1918 (source: papers he filed for the WWI draft). Eventually Abraham opened his own dairy (A. Rubin) and then expanded to sell candy (Rubin Sundries) and cigarettes (Melman & Co.).

While Abraham was in the US, his wife, SIRILA, ran a general dry goods and grocery store in Kamenets-Litovsk and lived behind it with her two sons and her parents. Apparently Abraham had built a large house for his family to live in (across from the store) but the house was immediately taken over by the army and the family never lived in it. When their son Scholem was three years old, he was considered a brilliant child and was sent to study and live in Brest-Litovsk with Sirila's parents. At some point, they all ended up back in Kamenets-Litovsk.

Abraham had sent Sirila money to emmigrate with the children however, before she left, there was a pogrom in Kamenets-Litovsk and she fled town with her two boys. The younger son, Peretz (Philip), was ill and was unable to obtain a health certificate and photo for travel. Sirila borrowed a healthy child from a neighbor, told him to make a funny face, and had photos taken of him that she used for their paperwork. (A variation of this story is that Philip developed a rash on the boat coming over and she borrowed a healthy child to get disembarkation paperwork.)

SIRILA (aka Cyzla) and their two oldest sons came to the US seven years after Abraham. They arrived on 23 Aug 1920 on the ship the UNITED STATES from Copenhagen in 1920. The ship manifest states she was 5'1' with black hair and brown eyes and was headed to her husband, “ABRAHAM RUBIN” at 642 E. 9th Street, NYC. This is where Abraham was living with his brother Sam. Later census records show her name as SADIE or ZIREL. Abraham's 1918 WWI draft registration lists his wife's name as CELIA.

The 1930 US Census shows ABRAHAM and SIRILA living on 45th Street in Brooklyn in a home they bought for $16,700. It states Abraham owned a Dairy and was naturalized. According to his naturalization records on May 8, 1924, he was 5'1" and 175 lbs. with brown hair and gray eyes and he lived at 642 E. 9th St., NYC (VOL 653 pg 211). He had severe arthritis and had to stop working several years before his death. His death certificate states he had been in the dairy business for 25 years but had not worked for two years prior to his death. Cause of death is listed as" broncho-pneumonia, myocardial failure, diabetes mellutus, arthritis deformanis".

Family members remember her as SIRILA and say she was a great beauty. Her grandchildren called her Lady Grandma as she was always well put together! Sirila lived in the Half Moon Nursing Home in Coney Island for two years after her fourth husband died.

Children of ABRAHAM DUBINER and SIRILA UNTERMAN are:

i. SHOLEM DUBINER (aka SAM RUBIN) , born 13 Aug 1910 in Kamenets-Litovsk and died 11 Feb 2001 in St. Louis, MO. At the age of three, labeled as a genius, Sholem was sent to Brest Litovsk to study and live with his maternal grandparents, the Unterman's, in Brest-Litovsk. At some point, they all returned to live in Kamanets-Litovsk prior to emmigrating to the US in 1920. Sam claimed he saw his first flush toilet when he was ten years old during his immigration to the US. Sam went to medical school in Dublin and then had a solo obstetrics practice in Baltimore, MD at Johns Hopkins. He married his childhood sweetheart, RINA GORDON rather than agreeing to an arranged marriage his mother was suggesting. Rina and Sam had three children. After working very hard for years, Sam celebrated his retirement, enjoying it to the fullest to make up for the childhood he said he missed. (NOTE: It is said he died at 94 but this does not jive with the information available.)

ii. PERETZ (PHILIP) DUBINER, born 16 Dec 1912, Kamenets-Litovsk and died about 2003 in NY (?). He married BLANCHE NOSNICK and they had three children. After Blanche died, Philip married FLORENCE UNKNOWN. NOTES: It is said he died at the age of 91. The ship manifest lists his name as DERCE.

iii. FREDRICK RUBIN, born 21 Jun 1921, NY. Fred is named for his grandfather Schrage-Feivel. (Fred is the nephew who reported his Uncle Isaac Dubiner's murder in the Shoah through a Page of Testimony at Yad Vashem.) Fred married CLAIRE BERKOWITZ 15 JUN 1946 in NYC after Fred got out of the army. He and his brothers, PHILIP and JERRY took over the family dairy that eventually became sundry distributors for cigarettes and candy.

SHOLEM DUBINER (SCHRAGE-FEIVEL 3, SCHOLEM 2, UNKNOWN 1) was born 15 Jun 1891 in Kamenets-Litovsk, and died in the US. He married ETTA FARBSTEIN (aka Yetta) 01 Jun 1916 in Brooklyn, NY, daughter of JACOB FARBSTEIN and GOLELE MOSHKIN. She was born 05 Jun 1895 in Kamenets-Litovsk, and died in the US.

Etta and her family came to the US in 1900. Sam immigrated to the US 01 Mar 1911 on the SS VADERLAND from Antwerp. He was going to his nephew, Louis GOLDFARB at 138 Norfolk Street, NY. He states he is a merchant, has $25 and is 20 years old. He was 5'3" with dark complection, dark hair and brown eyes.

Sam worked in the butter and egg business and owned his own company (Whole Butter ?). He married Etta 01 Jun 1916, Brooklyn, NY (#6573) when he was 25 and she was 21. On their marriage certificate, he listed his occupation as a Salesman.

According to his 1920 naturalization records (Petitioned in 1913; Naturalized 10 May 1920, NYC) he was 5'0" and weighed 130 lbs., had brown hair and brown eyes and he lived at 213 E. 7th St., NYC. (VOL 378 pg 113)

According to the 1930 census, Sam and Yetta were living in Brooklyn where they owned their home on East 8th Street. The census states they paid $18,000 for it.

i. SYLVIA RUBIN, born 11 Mar 1917, NYC.

ii. PHILIP RUBIN, born 1921, NYC.

CHRINCHA (ANNIE) DUBINER-GRUSHKIN

Listed on the ship manifest as CHINEZA (age 27), CHRINCHA arrived in the US on 12 Mar 1921. She landed in Boston after traveling on the SS SUSQUEHANNA and she was heading to her brother SAM RUBIN living at 642 E. 9th Street, NYC.

Immigration records clearly show Chincha DUBINER arrived with her brothers CHAIM DUBINER (age 17) and AJZYK DUBINER (age 23). However, Isaac never actually came to the US. Chincha married David GRUSHKIN before leaving Kamenets-Litovsk. As David was unable to obtain a passport of his own (not sure why - possibly because he was supposed to serve in the army), he used Chincha's brother (Isaac DUBINER's) passport and Chincha actually arrived with one brother (Chiam) and her husband David.  For many years they feared that immigration officials would find out about this and deport him!

Isaac DUBINER, who at the time did not want to come to the US, never immigrated.  He remained in Kamenets-Litovsk and was murdered in the Holocaust in 1943. 

While everyone called her CHRINCHA, her name is listed as ANNIE in the 1930 census. She and her husband, DAVID GRUSHKIN were living at 734 East 9th Street. DAVID also immigrated in 1921. He was naturalized on 06 JAN 1930 (certificate ## 3222404, NYC) at the age of 31. (petition # 156232)

MOTEL DUBINER (aka Max Rubin)

MOTEL DUBINER (FEIVEL 3, SCHOLEM 2, UNKNOWN 1) was born 1897 in Kamenets-Litovsk, and died in the US . He married twice.

In 1921 Max married ANNA BIRANKRANTZ (NYC Marriage Cert #33621). At the time, MAX was living at 642 E. 9th St. and ANNA was living at 644 E. 9th St. He was 26 she was 24. He was from Grodno and she was from Galicia. They had a son SAMUEL in 1923. Anna died shortly thereafter and MAX then married IDA RADINSKY 16 DEC 1924 (NYC Marriage Cert #2296). Their marriage certificate states MAX was 28 and was still living at 642 E. 9th St. and he was widowed. He was a salesman at the time. This was IDA's first marriage, she was 26 and was living at 145 Essex St, NYC.

Immigration records show MOTEL immigrated to the US 30 Dec 1913 on the SS FINLAND from Antwerp and he traveled with his brother ABRAHAM. They were headed to their brother SCHULEM DUBINER (aka Sam Rubin) at 213 E. 7th St. NYC.

As per the 1920 US census, MAX and his brother ABRAHAM were living with their brother Sam, Sam's wife Yetta, and Sam's daughter Sylvia at 642 E. 9th Street in NYC.

The 1930 US Census shows Max and Ida living on Avenue D with two children. There is a notation on the census form that Samuel was a child of Max's first wife and Miriam, born 1925, was Ida’s child. In 1930, they were renting their apartment for $30/month and Max was a driver for a retail dairy. (Sam’s dairy? ... Abraham's dairy?)

NOTE: On his marriage certificate to Anna in 1921 he lists his father as PHILIP and his mother as LEAH MOLDRINBOM.

AJZYK (aka Isaac) DUBINER

In spite of the fact that immigration records show AJZYK (age 23) arriving in the US with his brother CHAIM (age 17) and his sister CHINEZA (age 27) on 12 Mar 1921, he never actually immigrated to the US. Instead, his brother-in-law, David GRUSHKIN, used his passport.

Isaac DUBINER remained in Kamenets-Litovsk and was murdered in the Holocaust in 1943. 

In 1995, FRED RUBIN, completed a Yad Vashem Page of Testimony stating that his uncle, ISAAC DUBINER, was killed in the Shoah mid-1940's in Kamenets-Litovsk.

CHAIM DUBINER (aka Hyman Rubin)

As per the 1930 census, CHAIM and his brother MENDEL were living with their mother LEAH on E. 5th Street in NYC. HYMAN was a plumber and eventually went to work for Sam's Dairy. He married (?) and had two children, Florence and Philip.

GENENDEL(GERTIE/GERTRUDE) DUBINER

GENENDEL DUBINER was born in Kamenets-Litovsk in 1906 and died in NY 1964.

At the age of 18 she immigrated to the US 20 Nov 1924 on the HOMERIC that sailed from Cherbourg with her mother LEAH DUBINER (age 62) and her brother MENDEL (age 17). She is listed on the ship manifest as GAIMENDEL.

She married LOUIS WIDOM in NYC 30 JUN 1929 when she was 23 and he was 33. They operated a Mom & Pop grocery store at 235 East 4th Street, NYC from 1929 until 1961. They had two children:

i. FRED WIDOM, born 1930, NYC. (Taught HS in NYC 1956-1990)

ii. SALLY WIDOM, born 1936, NYC. (Teacher/Homemaker, NYC)

MENDEL DUBINER (aka Manny Rubin)

At the age of 17 he immigrated to the US 20 Nov 1924 on the HOMERIC that sailed from Cherbourg with his mother LEAH DUBINER (age 62) and his sister GENENDEL (age 18).

As per the 1930 census, MENDEL and his brother HYMAN were living with their mother LEAH on E. 5th Street in NYC. MENDEL (MANNY) (age 25) married ROSE LIPSHUTZ (age 24) on 04 NOV 1930. She was born in Russia and her father was LOUIS LIPSHUTZ and her mother was FANNY KAPLAN.

Manny worked for KRAFT Foods and his sons, both worked for their cousin, Fred Rubin in what was originally A. Rubin's Dairy.

FRIEDA DUBINER (aka Frieda Chessler)

NOTE: Frieda MAY NOT BE a daughter of SCHOLEM and BEILA. She might be a niece (the daughter of one of Sholem’s brothers).

FRIEDA (DUBINER) CHESSLER - (SCHOLEM FRIEDMAN 2, UNKNOWN 1) was most likely born before 1876 in Kamenets-Litovsk. She married BENJAMIN CHESSLER. We have not found any records of Frieda or Benjamin immigrating to the US.

FRIEDA DUBINER and BENJAMIN CHESSLER had two children we know of:

i. YANKEL (JACOB) CHESSLER (aka JANKEL CZESCHLACH) (BENJAMIN CHESSLER 3, SCHOLEM FRIEDMAN 2, UNKNOWN 1) , born" Wisotski-Litovsk" about 1892.

Yankel, age 19, immigrated 24 Jul 1911 on the SS NOORDAM from Rotterdam. He stated hw was from Wysokie and was going to his cousin, Chaje DUBINER at 127 Ridge St, NYC. (Could be (S)Chaje or CH(aim).)

Yankel married Sadie HAMER 09 Apr 1921 (marriage certificate #9250 Manhattan).

ii. DORA (CHESSLER) RUBIN (BENJAMIN CHESSLER 3, SCHOLEM FRIEDMAN 2, UNKNOWN 1), born 1896, Grodno, Russia. Dora married her cousin, JACOB (DUBINER) RUBIN on 26 May 1918 in NY. Information on their marriage and offspring is listed above under JACOB (son of Ahron-Michal DUBINER).

DABE CZESLER (Dora Chessler) immigrated on the SS NOORDAM from Rotterdam arriving 21 Jan 1914. She was 18, 5" tall with brown hair, had $20 and was going to her brother Yankel Chessler at 304 E 3rd Street, NYC. Her last permanent residence was "wisooki leth" (Wysokie-Litovsk) . She was a seamstress and her closest relative left behind was her father, Bobe CZESLER.
